What are connections?

On the surface we do appear to be more connected than ever, but is this really the case? Once you start looking around, you may realize that we are more disconnected than ever.

It may seem a bit odd, but we are now perhaps a lot more disconnected and removed from others than we have ever been. Quite often we do not any longer have contact with people on a personal basis. Most of our connections are in cyber space, and we connect with others via social media and email.

Stay Connected

We really should ask ourselves if this means we are connected at all. Forming connections are the basis of life, and we need to be able to form bonds and friendships with other people to stay both mentally and physically healthy.

Did you know that just over twenty years ago most of us knew the name of our next door neighbor? Times have changed, now the majority of us do not even know the name of the person living next to us, and sometimes we may not even know what they look like. This is not just a problem in big cities, it is a problem everywhere.

Personal connections are much more than bits of code in cyber space; they are the essentials of human life. A friendly greeting, an unexpected smile and a touch of hand, now seem to be far removed from our everyday life, but in fact that is how we stay connected.

How to reconnect

To reconnect with each other, we must first of all want to connect. We do have a basic need to be connected to each other, but we must take some time out of our busy lives to make connections.

There are many different ways to stay connected, and to begin a connection with another person. First of all we need to be a little braver. This might mean that you need to knock on your neighbor’s door and introduce yourself. Invite them for a cup of tea or coffee, and start making a friend.

One of the best ways of connecting to a person is smiling. A smile can lead to many things, and most of the time it leads to us speaking to each other and starting a conversation. From the first word, the world is your oyster. Allow yourself time to discover each other, and practice the ancient art of making friends. Remember friendships, both same sex and opposite sex, make for much stronger relationships in the long run.

How do we stay connected?

But after we have done all of this, how do we stay connected? It may not be easy, but it is important to make sure to take the time to stay connected. You don’t necessarily have to spend a long time and a lot of money to stay connected, but there is nothing like a friendly chat over a drink or lunch. Perhaps, it is just as simple as sharing five minutes of your life on the bus or on the underground with the person sitting next to you. Letting people be part of your life could be the simple answer.
