Diet myths are running rampant and as such you are bound to come across many nutrition myths that are not necessarily true. Consequently, I would like to set the records straight with regard to some of the most common myths I have come across that I feel need clarification.
1. A GLUTEN FREE DIET
Diet Myth: That it is a carbohydrate free diet and thus helps you lose weight.
The Truth: A gluten free diet regime contrary to popular belief, is not a no carbohydrate plan and as such not a weight loss strategy. Tricia Thompson author of “Gluten-free nutrition”, says that it’s a diet for people suffering from the auto immune digestive disorder known as Celiac Disease, this disorder causes the body to have an intolerance to gluten. Clearly showing that it is not a weight loss diet.
2. THE VEGETARIAN DIET
Diet Myth: That it is healthy and no health risk can be posed by following this diet regime.
The Truth: Unless all vitamins and minerals lost by cutting out meat from our diet are adequately replaced this can’t be true. Failure to adequately replace them results in weakening of your immune system due to lack of important nutrients such as Iron and protein. If you are a meat lover have your meat but in recommended portions.
3. THE LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIET
Diet Myth: That by giving up foods rich in carbohydrates such as bread and pasta the pounds will melt away.
The Truth: Low carbohydrate diets are a potential digestive nightmare due to lack of fiber, this results in bouts of chronic constipation. A combination of healthy carbohydrates is a good source of energy, helps to boost your memory and stabilize mood swings throughout the day. Have a serving of roughage in your daily food intake to help ease movement in the bowels.
4. THE VEGAN DIET
Diet Myth: Is that this diet is low in saturated fats that are found in meats and thus are healthy.
The Truth: Most people who go vegan do so to minimize risk of heart diseases and other chronic conditions. This is all good, provided that you get a healthy mix of fiber, protein, minerals and vitamins, unfortunately most vegans come up short which means they miss out on vitamin B12, healthy fats EPA and DHA found in foods from animals.
In conclusion, good information acquired from a thorough research they say, is the best defense against ignorance. Take time and be informed before conforming to the norm.
